India Residency 2010 is a self-initiated artist residency, taking place in Chennai, India, from the 10th of January until the 21st of February.
The objective is to get the chance to work intensily for a period of 6 weeks, both independantly, and collaboratively, in the company of interesting, creative individuals, and in a surrounding where any mondane duties which frequently weaken focus or productivity, would be aborted.
India became the destined land for three reasons. First, the organizers are familiar with the location and have established connections with local residents and professionals, so accomodation and materials are easily taken care of.
Secondly, due to the relative inexpensiveness of the Indian economy, projects which need to be actualized on a large scale can be realized. Projects that can give valuable experience, and let the individual artist take huge leaps forward in his artistic development, but would be left as mere plans, would the artist not have the option to realize them in such affordable surroundings.
Thirdly, India is a very inspiring place. Even overwhelming at times. It is intense to all the senses, smells, colours, extreme conditions of richness and poverty, extreme landscapes of deserts, jungles and mountains, exotic wildlife, interesting social patterns and customs, rich political and religious history, and so the list goes on.
The Residency also offers the chance of isolation when needed, being situated on the outskirts of the city.
At the end of the Residency, on February 20th we will organize an exhibition in Chennai, and we aim to invite select local artists to exhibit alongside us.
Once back in Amsterdam we will arrange an exhibtion there, in order to share the products of the Residency.
